The New Mexico Defense Lawyers Association, Inc. was incorporated on August 9, 1985 and is the only New Mexico organization of civil defense attorneys.  The purpose of the association is to bring together by association, communication and organization, New Mexico civil defense lawyers.  NMDLA's greatest strength is education and service to its membership.  NMDLA aims to fulfill its purposes in the following ways:

Benefits of
Membership

Professional association of New Mexico defense attorneys that helps improve and sharpen attorney skill, knowledge, and results in defense cases.

Improvements of advocacy to aid the courts in creating reasonable and understandable standards for emerging areas of the law, for example, punitive damages.  The legal standards should make New Mexico case law dependable and reliable, thus, promoting business in New Mexico.  Dependable and reliable case law will also prevent the legislature from arbitrarily defining justice in the State of New Mexico.

Professional satisfaction in seeing the quality of litigation improve both personally, and for the Bar in general.

Establishment of a personal reputation in the insurance industry for expertise in particular areas of the law.

E-mail service, through which members can request and receive information from other members on experts, judges and issues.

Informal lunches of defense attorneys to discuss verdicts, settlements and other issues affecting civil defense practice.

“Prestige” of getting one’s name and photo published in the quarterly newsletter to hundreds of attorneys and all the judges in the state by writing articles for the newsletter.

 

Association
Objectives

The purposes of the New Mexico Defense Lawyers Association:

  • To provide continuing legal education among our membership

  • To maintain a forum for comment on issues of common concern

  • To act as a clearinghouse for practical and technical information

  • To serve as representative for and on behalf of the civil defense Bar generally

Newsletter
The quarterly news magazine, Defense News, contains important articles on the latest development in the law. 

Seminars
The association sponsors continuing legal education seminars throughout the year.

Amicus Briefs
The association is actively engaged in a policy of filing amicus curiae briefs on issues of exceptional interest to the defense bar as a whole.

Networking
The association actively encourages networking opportunities through Email and
